64zero3 is very pleased to announce that Auckland/Berlin based artist Judy Millar has been selected (with Francis Upritchard) to represent New Zealand at the Venice Biennale in July 2009. Millar is well known both nationally and internationally for her large canvases which explore the painted gesture most closely associated with Abstract Expressionism but without the embedded heroics. These large swirls, whorls and folds in bold acid colours or deep black and silver are the product of painting and ‘unpainting’ as Millar describes it; or addition and subtraction and amount to a complex spatiality of presence, recession and traces in between.
These attributes and relationships will be writ large in the New Zealand pavilion at Venice 2009 with the canvasses themselves twisting into gestures. These embodied flourishes will cloak the exterior of the space and reach out from the walls, up from the floor and down from the ceiling making manifest Millar’s desire for paintings to breach their traditionally submissive relationship to architectural surrounds and actively take their place in our world.
An exhibition of Judy Millar’s work will be presented here at 64zero3 in November 2008.
